ADVOCACY AND POLICY COMMITTEE

MISSION AND PURPOSE

ADVOCACY AND POLICY COMMITTEE MISSION AND PURPOSE:

The Advocacy and Policy Committee of Latinos in Heritage Conservation advocates the centrality of American Latin@ historical and cultural heritage—both tangible and intangible—to the historical and cultural fabric of the United States of America.

The Advocacy and Policy Committee advocates for and promotes the presence and visibility of American Latin@s in historic preservation agencies, organizations, programs, and projects at the local, state, and national levels.

To ensure Latin@ historical and cultural sites have a propitious, equitable environment for moving through the established preservation processes¾from identification, to recordation, to nomination, to designation¾and to ensure the just inclusion of Latin@ heritage in the preservation landscape, the Advocacy and Policy Committee reviews existing preservation policies and, where necessary, advocates for change in those policies and/or proposes new policies. To that end, the Advocacy and Policy Committee monitors and reports on Federal and State legislation, and on County and Municipal codes, pertaining to historic and cultural preservation as these laws and codes affect current, present, and future Latin@ sites.

Recognizing the value of collaboration and collective action, the Advocacy and Policy Committee leads Latinos in Heritage Conservation’s initiative to seek and form partnerships with allied leaders and organizations within and beyond the preservation community.
