General Responsibilities

Board Engagement: Works with the Board of Directors to fulfill LHC’s mission.

  • Responsible for leading the organization in a manner that supports and guides the mission as defined by the Board of Directors. 

  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and  accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function effectively and to make  informed decisions. 

Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the  organization. 

  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other revenues necessary to support the organization’s mission. 

  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the organization to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and regular financial statements that accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.

  • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position. 

Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled  through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach. 

  • Responsible for implementing the organization’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission. 

  • Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that LHC can successfully fulfill its mission into the future. 

  • Responsible for the enhancement of the organization’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, social, and civic organizations.

  • Responsible for ensuring that the organization’s structures, systems, programs, and policies are created and implemented through a racial and social equity lens. 

Organization Operations: Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate. 

  • Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff and contractors.

  • Responsible for effective administration and planning of LHC programs, membership development, volunteer management, human resources management, community  engagement, advocacy, public relations, and operations. 

  • Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Report to and work closely with LHC’s Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy  decisions, fundraising, and to increase the overall visibility of the organization. 

  • Recruit and hire additional staff, including an administrative and development specialist and project coordinator, as well as interns, fellows, and consultants 

  • Supervise and collaborate with LHC staff, interns, fellows, and consultants. 

  • Strategic planning and implementation. 

  • Planning and operation of the annual budget. 

  • Serve as LHC’s primary spokesperson to the organization’s constituents, the media, and the general public. 

  • Establish and maintain relationships with various organizations and utilize those relationships  to strategically enhance LHC’s mission. 

  • Engage in fundraising and developing other revenues. 

  • Oversee marketing and other communications efforts. 

  • Oversee organization of Board and committee meetings. 

  • Establishing employment and administrative policies and procedures for all functions and for the day-to-day operation of the nonprofit. 

  • Review and approve contracts for services. 

  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Professional Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following education, experience, skills, and  characteristics: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred (Master’s, Ph.D., J.D., etc.); or any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Five or more years’ experience in management within non-profit organizations or similar settings.  

  • Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors. 

  • Previous experience in managing, motivating, and empowering a strong staff. Ability to promote an organizational culture that fosters passion for LHC’s mission.  

  • Knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act, historic preservation practice and policies; however, we encourage applicants with working knowledge of historic preservation practice and policies in combination with other relevant experience such as cultural and arts  organizations, public administration, public relations, planning, real estate, conservation, business, and/or law, to apply. 

  • High level strategic thinking and planning. Ability to envision and convey the organization’s strategic future to the staff, board, volunteers, and donors. 

  • Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to donors, volunteers, and the general public. 

  • Experience conducting outreach and engagement with racially and ethnically diverse groups.

  • Demonstrated commitment to racial and social equity and social justice. 

  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff. 

  • Active fundraising experience. Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community a plus. A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results. 

  • Previous success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers. 

  • Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation. 

  • Strong financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision making and reporting. 

  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to speak, read, and/or write in Spanish a plus.  

  • Transparent and high integrity leadership. 

  • Strong work ethic.
