Abuelas Project
What is the Abuelas Project? ¿Qué es el Abuelas Project?
The Abuelas Project pays homage to nuestras abuelas, or our grandmothers, and the strong women in our lives that are our culture-bearers
The Abuelas Project is a multi-year preservation initiative to collect, curate, and amplify stories about places that matter to Latinx communities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Building on recent efforts to conserve Latinx heritage, the digital project seeks to uncover the social, cultural, and economic connections our communities forge through historic places.
The Abuelas Project aims to converse with scholarly and technical studies of Latinx histories and cultures, while elevating everyday voices.
Abuelas Project will encourage intergenerational storytelling using new media, share information about Latinx preservation (theme studies, surveys, nominations, etc.), support allied efforts to designate Latinx historic sites, and identify important patterns related to Latinx preservation nationwide.
The Abuelas Project: Texas pilot will be live by the end of 2023
This project has been funded in part by a grant from the Mellon Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) Fonren Fund. Thank you, Mellon and NTHP!
