Latinos in Heritage Conservation is pleased to announce the Isabel Espinoza Polanco student scholarship award of $500 to assist one currently enrolled college or graduate student with the cost of attending the Encuentro 2018 conference in Providence, RI. The scholarship recipient may use the stipend for hotel, transportation, and conference registration.
The Isabel Espinoza Polanco Student Scholarship
In honor of their mother, Isabel Espinoza Polanco, Julianne Polanco, the current California State Historic Preservation Officer, and her family, offer a scholarship opportunity to students and community to participate in and contribute to Encuentro 2018.
Mrs. Isabel Espinoza Polanco believed that knowledge is power. She dedicated her life to teaching children and serving her community. Mrs. Polanco was a mentor to many and friend to all. She was the first-born to Mexican immigrants and extremely proud of her history. She believed that every person has the power to make their future whatever they choose through education, perseverance, and a little luck. She also believed it is each individual’s duty to help each other, thus creating thriving communities.

Scholarship Details and FAQs
The Isabel Espinoza Polanco Student Scholarship is targeted toward an applicant who can demonstrate financial need and has the desire to learn about and contribute to heritage-related fields. The scholarship will assist with hotel, transportation, and conference registration for the attendee through a $500 stipend payment awarded before the conference. The recipient will be responsible for completing their own registration, travel arrangements, and hotel reservations, as well as any costs beyond the scholarship amount.
How do I apply?
Interested students should submit a completed application to Sehila Casper at scasper@savingplaces.org by
Monday, April 2, 2018 at 11:59 PM CST. The applicant will receive notification by April 9, 2018.
What should I include in my application submission?
The Isabel Espinoza Polanco Student Scholarship application must include:

Completed application form with a short essay about your career and learning objectives.

One (1) letter of recommendation from a professor familiar with your academic work in the area of heritage studies.

CV or resume

How is the recipient selected?
A committee of representatives from Latinos in Heritage Conservation will select the scholarship recipient based on the student’s application materials, including the following:

The student demonstrates financial need.

The student shows an active interest and involvement in contributing to the heritage field.

Has academic or career goals to seek a role in heritage-related fields.

Who is eligible?
The application is open to full-time college students enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program or certificate program in heritage fields including, but not limited to: historic preservation, history, arts and culture, architecture, ethnic studies, sociology, anthropology, and other related degree concentrations.
Does a scholarship recipient have any special obligations while at the conference?
The scholarship recipient is asked to be an active participant at the three-day conference, provide a photograph to share on social media, and write a short article about their experience to be published in La Herencia, our quarterly newsletter, following Encuentro.
