about Dr. Castañeda
Dr. Antonia I. Castañeda is a pioneering Chicana feminist historian and author who embodies the spirit of innovation and leadership we celebrate with these awards. One of the founders of the subfield of Chicana history, she was born in Texas and raised in Washington, she holds a Ph.D. in U.S. History from Stanford University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Castañeda has focused on the intersections of class, gender, sexuality, and race in the lives of women of color in California and the Borderlands. Her dedication to scholarship is evident in her contributions, which include award-winning articles and the co-founding of the acclaimed Chicana Matters Book Series. Notably, Dr. Castañeda played a pivotal role in shaping the preservation field with her work on the "Five Views: An Ethnic Historic Site Survey for California" and the "American Latinos and the Making of the United States: A Theme Study."
Beyond academia, her commitment extends to mentoring future generations of leaders through her community work and teaching experience at UC Santa Barbara, UT Austin, and St. Mary's University. She is an early founder of Latinos in Heritage Conservation, encouraging the next generation to lead this cause. She is a highly respected scholar and activist who has received numerous accolades, including the NACCS Scholar of the Year award.
