Latinos in Heritage Conservation to Reveal First National List
of Endangered Latinx Landmarks Groundbreaking announcement on Sept. 9 highlights how immigrant neighborhoods, murals, and community spaces are disappearing from America’s story
NATIONAL — 08/21/2025 — Entire chapters of Latinx history are vanishing before they are even named. On September 9, Latinos in Heritage Conservation (LHC) will reveal the first national list of Endangered Latinx Landmarks during a live, public webinar.
Unlike the colonial-era mansions, cathedrals, and monumental civic buildings that dominate traditional American preservation of “high style” architecture, Latinx landmarks tell stories of labor, migration, resistance, and everyday survival. They include tortilla shops, murals painted under freeways, LGBTQ+ safe spaces, and immigrant barrios that shaped generations. Yet according to LHC’s Equity Study, only 1% of sites on the National Register of Historic Places acknowledge Latinx contributions — leaving many of these vital places unrecognized and at risk.
“Our landmarks carry the weight of resilience, community, and survival,” said Sehila Mota Casper, Executive Director of LHC. “They are murals, cemeteries, gathering places, and adobe churches. Each one holds a piece of America’s story. Naming them is the first step to keeping them alive.”
The initiative seeks to change this reality by bringing national attention to Latinx heritage sites that remain overlooked and by mobilizing communities to ensure they are preserved before they are lost to demolition, gentrification or displacement, climate, and disasters.
