"The memories of the persons buried in the Elgin Mexican Cemetery have been diminished by the woeful state of the Cemetery. The Cycle 2 Grant from Latinos in Heritage Conservation will enable us to conduct a comprehensive cemetery environmental study and burial ground investigation at the Elgin Mexican Cemetery-- Some markers are in a flood prone area. After this phase, preservation to resurrect and honor those memorials to the past citizens of Elgin, Texas can begin. This will allow us to better honor and respect those early pioneers of the Mexican-American community in Elgin and Texas by a restoration of the dignity and respect that a cemetery deserves."
