Peñasco Valley Heritage Plaza – Stabilization Phase of the Historic Old Peñasco High School
Peñasco Valley Historical Preservation Society (PVHPS)
Peñasco, NM
Funding supports stabilization of the historic Old Peñasco High School, a National Register-listed adobe structure built in 1931 in rural northern New Mexico. The project includes adobe wall repair, structural stabilization, mud plaster restoration, framing repair, and restoration of historic windows.
"The Peñasco Valley is rich with cultural knowledge, deep family roots, and traditions that have been carried forward for generations. The Old Peñasco High School is not just a historic adobe building; it is a symbol of education, resilience, and shared memory for the people of this valley. After decades of vacancy, the building is threatened by time and deterioration. The Nuestra Herencia Grant from Latinos in Heritage Conservation will help us complete the critical stabilization work needed to protect the structure and move us closer to bringing it back into service as a community gathering space. Stabilization is one of the first major steps toward ensuring that this building stands for another hundred years, carrying forward the stories, traditions, and potential of the Peñasco Valley."
