LHC Hosts Teacher Workshop to Integrate Latinx History in Classrooms

McAllen event offers CPE credits, classroom-ready curriculum, and tools for culturally responsive teaching

McAllen, TX | May, 8 — As debates around representation in education grow louder across the country, Latinos in Heritage Conservation (LHC) is taking local action. On June 5, 2025, the national nonprofit will host a professional development workshop at the McAllen Public Library to equip Texas educators with the tools to teach Latinx heritage and historic preservation in their classrooms.

The Teacher Professional Development Workshop will take place from 3:30 to 8:30 PM in Meeting Room AB. Participants will receive five Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits approved by the State of Texas, along with ready-to-use lesson plans, curriculum samples, textbook analyses, and classroom resources that center Latinx cultural heritage.

“This workshop invites educators to reimagine the classroom as a place where Latinx heritage is not a footnote but a foundation,” said Asami Robledo-Allen Yamamoto, LHC’s Director of Education, Outreach, Communications, and Marketing. “Participants will leave with practical lesson plans, five CPE credits, and a stronger sense of how Latinx heritage can shape more inclusive classrooms.”

In addition to training, the event will foster peer connections and dialogue around culturally responsive teaching. Participants will have space to collaborate, share ideas, and explore new approaches to storytelling, preservation, and student engagement.

Impact of Federal Cuts on Cultural Education

The McAllen workshop comes at a critical time. Recent cuts to federal humanities funding—particularly through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH)—have limited LHC’s ability to expand its educational programming.

“These cuts forced the cancellation of planned CommUNITY Workshops that would have brought similar learning opportunities to other cities across Texas,” said Sehila Mota Casper, Executive Director of LHC. “In response, we’ve prioritized professional development for educators, recognizing that reaching students begins in the classroom.”

The defunding reflects a broader trend of divestment in cultural education, disproportionately affecting communities that have long been underrepresented in preservation spaces. In the face of these challenges, LHC is doubling down on educator support—understanding that when funding disappears, teachers often become the last line of cultural continuity.
