Seguin, Texas

Juan Seguin Elementary School

Year Built:

1903

After Seguin's school board voted in 1902 to separate Mexican American children, "La Juana" became one of the earliest segregated Mexican schools in Texas. Generations of students learned here with wood stoves, no lighting, and punishment for speaking Spanish. Today, alumni are leading the effort to save the campus and record its stories, but severe deterioration threatens the oldest building faster than they can repair it.
