La Morada of San Luis

Year Built:

1865

In Colorado’s oldest town, La Morada is a rare surviving meeting house of Los Hermanos Penitentes, who preserved generations of Indo-Hispano faith, nursed the sick, buried the dead, and cared for widows when priests could not reach the valley. Only two moradas remain active in the San Luis Valley. After 50 years of vacancy, its west wall has collapsed and been emergency-stabilized, but far more is needed to secure its future.
