Teatro Bilingüe de Houston

Year Built:

1977

Founded in 1977 by Arnold Mercado, a Puerto Rican theater artist from New York, and shaped by the Chicano Movement, Teatro Bilingüe became the Second Ward’s home for bilingual theater, youth arts, community tradition, and the birthplace of Pancho Claus. For nearly 50 years, generations found creativity and belonging here. Today, the city-owned building sits without an operator or a stated plan, as redevelopment pressure intensifies around it.
