Next-Gen Student Scholarship

The application is open to college students currently enrolled in an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, or certificate program. Preference for students already involved in a heritage field, including but not limited to: historic preservation, history, arts and culture, architecture, ethnic studies, sociology, anthropology, equity/inclusion/social justice, community engagement, urban planning, and other related degree concentrations.

For students located in the Chicago area (25-mile radius), hotel accommodations will not be provided.

To qualify as a “student” for this scholarship, applicants must meet one of the following:

• Enrolled in a college or university program as of August 2026, or

• Accepted and enrolled in a degree or certificate program for Fall 2026, or

• Graduating in Summer 2026 (i.e., June–August 2026).

Individuals who graduate before Summer 2026 and are not registered for Fall 2026 enrollment are not eligible.

Interested students should submit a completed application due by Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM CST. The applicant will receive notification by May 29, 2026.

A committee of representatives from Latinos in Heritage Conservation will select the scholarship recipients based on the following evaluation criteria:

• The student demonstrates financial need and interest in Latinx heritage.

• The student shows an active interest and involvement in contributing to the heritage field and preserving BIPOC-related history.

• Has academic or career goals to seek a role in heritage-related fields.

The scholarship recipient is asked to be an active participant at the three-day summit (must attend all three days), provide photographs and testimonials to be used in LHC marketing, and write a thank you note to the scholarship funder.

The Next-Gen Student Scholarship prioritizes helping participants network and fully experience the conference. A limited number of Next-Gen Scholars will also have the chance to present a poster showcasing their research or professional projects at the Cultura & Comunidad Fair.

Applicants who wish to display their work must submit a brief proposal in the application, as poster space is limited. Selected presenters will be required to remain at their poster from 4:00–5:00 p.m. on August 20 and 21 to share their projects with fair attendees.

Beyond the financial component of covering registration costs and travel to Congreso, the Next-Gen Student Scholarship is an opportunity to network with leaders shaping the future of Latinx heritage. Congreso is where participants gain knowledge, tools, and relationships that strengthen preservation efforts at home. It is where you can build personal and professional networks that will serve you for years to come.

All Next-Gen Scholars will be assigned a mentor in the field who will enhance their conference experience. Following the conference, Next-Gen Scholars will receive a year-long Sustaining Membership to Latinos in Heritage Conservation to help you stay engaged and connected.
