In our second LHC Membership Webinar prgoram of 2025, Dr. Jeremy C. Wells, an independent scholar and artist, and Héctor J. Berdecía-Hernández, the founding Director-General of the Centro de Conservación y Restauración de Puerto Rico (CENCO), examine how architectural conservation in the U.S. has its origins in European traditions, particularly the Italian and English schools. They explore how these traditions inherent biases such as Euro-American supremacy and the exclusion of diverse voices. Their paper demonstrates how these doctrines shape current preservation policies, focusing on concepts like minimal intervention, authenticity, and unity, which may overlook or conflict with the lived experiences of our communities.
The discussion is moderated by LHC's Historic Preservation Officer, Hillary Morales Robles!
